Thinking Brain School creates lessons where parents and children ask questions and keep thinking together. This free lesson is one moment from MoneyKeepers.
The road, the streetlight, the fire truck, the school. To a kid, they are simply there. Tonight the secret comes out: all of it has a price, everybody chips in a little, and your kid has been chipping in too, every time they buy a snack.
Tax, in one sentence: the membership fee for the world we share. Tonight, 25 minutes to make that one sentence stick.
This page is also for parents who were never taught this themselves. Tap your way down, and you become TAX MAN before your kid ever sees the cape.
Every checkout total is hiding a confession. See for yourself.
If the tax line reads zero, that is not a mistake. Most states do not tax groceries (a few cities still add a small local tax), and five states (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon) have no state sales tax at all. A kid who discovers that has learned more, not less.
The stuff school never taught you. One minute per lesson, nothing extra. Each one ends with a line you can use on your kid tonight.
It is the membership fee for the world we share. Roads, streetlights, fire trucks, schools. No single family could buy any of them, so everybody chips in. Think of the dues in a condo building: every unit chips in for the hallway lights and the elevator. Tax is the same fee, for the biggest building there is.
The frame is what matters. A kid who learns it as money being taken sees it that way for life. A kid who learns it as a fee learns to count their share.
Three places. When you earn: income tax. When you own: property tax on the home, and in many states a yearly tax or fee on the car. When you buy: sales tax. Hold those three and you have the whole map.
And one adult secret: if you get a paycheck, it arrives with the tax already taken out. April is just the settle-up, which is why some people get money back and some owe a little more.
The US does this unusually: there is no national sales tax. Each state sets its own, and five (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon) have no state sales tax at all, though a few of their cities and resort towns add a small one of their own. Most states also skip groceries entirely, which is why a supermarket receipt often shows zero tax.
The receipt already confesses everything: subtotal, then TAX, then total. Divide the tax by the subtotal and you get the rate you actually paid. Your kid can discover that number themselves in chapter 2.
Income tax is progressive: higher slices of income pay higher rates. The single most common adult mistake lives here. "A raise into the next bracket means I take home less" is false. The higher rate touches only the dollars above the line. (Some benefit programs do have hard cutoffs, but that is not the bracket doing it.)
Why it matters: say the myth out loud once, and your kid quietly learns that earning more is a trap. That is the moment a kid decides whether earning more is worth it.
Two collectors, two shopping lists. Federal money buys the big and the far away: the checks that go to your grandparents (Social Security and Medicare), the military, the courts, the interstates. State and local money buys what you can see from your window: the streetlight, the park, the library, the fire truck. Schools are carried by local property taxes and state money together.
Point out the window and close with one line: the army is national, the streetlight is local. Chapter 5's street x-ray is this lesson made tappable.
You do not need to sell taxes as good tonight, or warn that they are bad. "It's needed" is the whole message. Whether rates are fair is a fight adults never finish, and your kid can join it when they are grown.
Plant one habit instead: what you earn is not what you get to keep. Ten coins come in, two come off, and you build the plan on eight. That single instinct is everything tonight is for.
You just took the course. Now the exam. Most adults miss at least one. Tap a card.
One posture note. Tonight we do not sell tax as good or warn that it is bad. "It's needed" is enough. The judging can wait until they are older.
How much of the view outside was bought by everyone together? Flip the switch. Even better with your kid.
Turn on the vision and six lights appear. Tap a number below and its story lands here, in text big enough to read out loud. Go through them with your kid.
Streetlights, parks and libraries are bought with city and town taxes. So is the electricity that keeps this one burning every single night.
Interstates are mostly built with federal money, state highways with state money, and your own street with city money. Pavement does not just happen. Every foot of it was paid for.
In almost every town, when something catches fire the truck comes and no bill follows. Everyone already paid a little, ahead of time. The station, the gear, the 911 dispatchers, all of it.
The building, the lights, the teachers. Local property taxes cover roughly a third of the bill nationwide and over half in some states. State money covers even more, and a smaller slice comes from the federal government.
Swings, slides, the sandbox. There is no ticket booth at the playground for exactly one reason: it was already paid for.
Nobody's taxes bought this house. It works the other way: the house pays. Property tax lands on it every year, owned or rented (then it hides inside the rent). That money is a big piece of what buys numbers 1 through 5.
It is all in the house already. Nothing to buy.
One tap prints just the emblem: one large for your shirt, two small for the jar and a spare. No printer? Press and hold the image to save it, then show it full screen against your chest. Or draw it: one shield, one big symbol. The hand-drawn one is funnier, and kids prefer it.
Each scene is one move and one line. Everything else is folded underneath. Do not break character. The cape comes off only at the end.
The move. Door open. Hands on hips. Hold three full seconds. Then take the snack right out of their hand.
The move. Count ten coins into their palm, out loud. The second the hand closes, take two and drop them in the jar so it rings.
The move. Sticky notes, rapid fire: teddy bear, helmet, desk. They will chase you peeling them off. Let them. This scene exists to be funny.
The move. The second they lift their drink, sticky note. Then drop your voice, produce the receipt, and put it in their hands. Do not point.
Let them hunt down the TAX line themselves. Then have them divide it by the subtotal and discover the rate. The receipt x-ray above is right there if you want it.
Reach grandly for the dog's treat or their last chip. "Dog snack tax." If they shout "That's not a real tax!", freeze mid-pose, then one line: "You're right. I don't get to invent one." If they just laugh, collapse on your own: "...no? Worth a try."
The move. Their eight coins in the middle of the table. The two from the jar beside them. Ring the five toys around the eight, naming each: the road, the streetlight, the fire truck. The last piece is theirs to place.
Cape off. Sit down next to them. You are their parent again. No quiz. One ask.
A finger landing on that line beats any definition they could recite.
The closing beat. They will ask about the two coins. Give them back, with one line.
If the last thing they feel tonight is robbed, the lesson taught the opposite of itself. The give-back is part of the show. And the next time they ask the cashier for the receipt unprompted, you will know tonight worked.
